World Polio Day is celebrated on 24th October every year to celebrate the progress and raise awareness of polio eradication. It was first observed in 1988 by WHO(World Health Organization) as a tribute to Dr. Albert Sabin, who died that day.
The day is commemorated globally through events held worldwide during which people can witness live demonstrations of health education programs, distribute leaflets about preventing polio, listen to speeches by prominent speakers, watch films on combating this disease, etc.
Polio is a highly infectious disease caused by the poliovirus which causes paralysis (paralysis) and often death due to respiratory failure or secondary infection with other opportunistic pathogens such as meningitis (inflammation of membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord), pneumonia, etc.
